Christine,
Terrific blog post and very thought-provoking. I am a PR professional and have a personal Twitter account, but also tweet information on our firm's account. I keep them separate for a reason.
At our firm, we've been expanding people we follow in the industry and some personal connections. On my own Twitter account, I have a blend of professional contacts, friends, and news feed-types.
When it comes to my personal account, I retweet and tweet original content. I feel that you can be professional and personal at the same time. Is there a boundary? Absolutely. You won't find me tweeting about lewd topics or using profanity because I value my reputation.
I tried to get into FourSquare, but it did not appeal to me. I don't think it adds value to let people know that “I'm at Pizza Hut.”
The bottom line is I do think you can be personal and professional at the same time. It's all a matter of how much you would like to blend the two.
Thanks!
